Promoting the work of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO)Ernest Charles welcomes this opportunity ...
Birdcare means helping our birds survive. Whether it’s through a harsh winter or a dry summer, we as individuals can make a difference. Ernest Charles has long been committed to providing the best of birdcare products for your gardens. Now we are delighted to be associated through this catalogue with the UK's leading wild bird research organisation, The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). The BTO is at the forefront of giving science-based understanding to the sometimes puzzling occurrences and trends we witness with garden bird life. Just this past 12 months have seen numbers of garden bird visitors seesaw, and there have been cases of avian diseases identified in gardens. We are grateful now to have direct access to the work and opinions of the BTO garden bird experts and to help promote the work of the BTO to the wider public.

Introducing Dr. Nick Carter FIEEM | Director of Environment and Conservation | Gardman Limited

This year is a very important one for the The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) as it is the start of the fieldwork for the wintering and breeding atlas. This project aims to record the birds in every 10 km square in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. This is a massive effort and all the more remarkable because the survey work will be undertaken by ordinary birdwatchers, an approach pioneered by the BTO.

If you would like to know more about the Atlas project including how you can take part or support it financially then please visit www.birdatlas.net. The BTO also organises most volunteer-based bird survey work in the UK across a variety of habitats, including gardens, and carries out detailed studies to understand how and why bird populations and distributions are changing. If you would like to become a member then click here for details of a special offer if you join through Ernest Charles.
The BTO has long recognised the importance of gardens as a habitat for birds, especially now that many people feed birds year-round (advocated first by the BTO) and wildlife friendly gardening has grown in popularity. BTO garden bird surveys have exposed the declines in House Sparrows and Starlings in some parts of the UK and the increases in Goldfinches, Magpies and Collared Doves.

It is only by carrying out detailed survey work like this over many years that we can keep track of the ups and downs of our birds and investigate the likely causes for change. Because of this interest in garden birds we are particularly pleased to be starting our association with Ernest Charles, one of the leading garden bird care mail order companies.

In this catalogue you will find a range of top quality foods, feeders, nest boxes and other accessories, including some BTO products and Gardman products endorsed by the BTO. Ernest Charles will make a payment to BTO for every product sold to support the vital surveys
and studies that we carry out to understand what is happening to our birds. We hope that this is just the start of a long and fruitful relationship that will benefit not only the two organisations but also the garden birds that we love to have around us.
