Autumn/Winter...

Demands for seeds and nuts may fall in August and early autumn with the availability of flower, grass, weed and tree seeds. Beech mast and cereals in the fields, followed by rosehips, blackberries and many berry forming shrub. But throughout this, feeding birds still has its' place, especially for those birds who have raised more than one brood. Always keep at least one feeder filled and some food for the ground feeding birds available for them to fall back on should they need it.

But as we go into the winter months and particularly during harsh spells of cold weather a well-stocked feeding station can be a lifesaver. Natural food supplies can become unobtainable or very limited and there can be quite a gap before new sources of food are available.

Place cosy little roosting pouches around your garden. Put up your nest boxes before the New Year giving plenty of time for them to inspect and roost there before pairing up.

By continuing to provide food and shelter all year round you can be confident that, not only, are you helping with the survival of our garden birds' but that you will constantly be rewarded by the welcome distraction their daily antics provide.
